Ingredients
Scale
Cake Batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping and Lava Sauce
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 3/4 cups hot water
Optional Serving
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream
Instructions
- Prepare the Crockpot: Lightly grease the inside of your crockpot with nonstick spray or butter to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the ingredients.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, vegetable oil or melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Stir until the batter is smooth without lumps. Then, pour this batter evenly into the prepared crockpot.
- Prepare Topping Mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and remaining 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the chocolate batter in the crockpot.
- Add Hot Water: Carefully pour the 1 3/4 cups of hot water over the top of the brown sugar and cocoa powder layer without stirring. This will create the molten lava sauce beneath the cake as it cooks.
- Cook the Cake: Cover the crockpot with its lid and cook on the high setting for 2 to 2 and a half hours. The cake is done when the top appears set but remains slightly gooey, signaling a lava center.
- Cool and Serve: Turn off the crockpot and let the cake cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream to complement the rich chocolate flavors.
Notes
- Do not stir after adding the hot water; this layering is what creates the molten lava texture.
- Cooking times may vary slightly depending on the crockpot model; start checking for doneness around 2 hours.
- This dessert is best enjoyed warm for the gooey lava effect.
- You can substitute vegetable oil with melted butter for a richer flavor.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated, though lava texture may be less pronounced.
