Ingredients
Scale
Pastry Dough
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3-4 tablespoons cold water
Filling
- 4-5 medium apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Gala and Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
Finishing
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Prepare Dough and Apples: Combine flour, cold cubed butter, and salt in a bowl and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, mixing just until the dough comes together. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Meanwhile, peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC).
- Assemble the Galette: On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a roughly 12-inch circle. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Arrange the sliced apples evenly in the center, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges. Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the apples, reserving some for serving if desired. Fold the edges of the dough over the apples, pleating as necessary to create a rustic crust.
- Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the folded dough edges with the beaten egg to achieve a golden finish. Sprinkle the crust edges lightly with granulated sugar for added crunch and sweetness. Bake the galette in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the galette to cool slightly on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes. Optionally, drizzle with additional salted caramel sauce before serving. Serve warm to enjoy the best flavors and texture.
Notes
- For best flavor, use a combination of apple varieties to balance sweetness and tartness.
- Chilling the dough is essential to ensure a flaky crust.
- You can prepare the galette up to the baking step and freeze; bake directly from frozen adding a few extra minutes to baking time.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent treat.
