Description

This Puff Pastry Apple Tart is a quick and elegant dessert featuring thinly sliced apples spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, baked on a flaky puff pastry crust. It combines the warm flavors of baked apples with a golden, buttery pastry, finished with a drizzle of honey for a touch of sweetness. Perfect for a cozy gathering or a simple treat, this tart serves nine and comes together effortlessly in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Mixture

  • 3 small/medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Pastry and Finish

  • 1 puff pastry sheet, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (additional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the tart.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel and thinly slice the apples. In a small bowl, toss the apple slices with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt until evenly coated.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on top. Using a sharp knife, score a one-inch border around the edge of the pastry without cutting all the way through. This scoring helps the edges puff up and contains the apple juices.
  4. Dock Pastry Center: Using a fork, poke holes in the center area of the puff pastry inside the scored border to prevent excessive puffing in the middle.
  5. Butter the Border: Brush the exposed border of the puff pastry with the remaining tablespoon of melted butter to encourage browning and crispiness during baking.
  6. Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the spiced apple slices on the pastry within the scored border. You can place them in three even rows or arrange them creatively to your liking.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the tart for about 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry edges are golden brown and puffed. Check at 15 minutes and then monitor closely every 2 minutes to avoid burning.
  8. Finish with Honey: Remove the tart from the oven and, while still warm, gently brush the tops of the apples with honey. Microwaving the honey for about 15 seconds can thin it for easier brushing if desired.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the tart to cool for several minutes to set before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples, but firmer apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work best to hold their shape during baking.
  • If you don’t have vanilla extract, you can omit it or substitute with a pinch of vanilla bean powder.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter with a vegan butter or margarine.
  • Arrange the apples tightly for a more uniform tart and to trap juices effectively.
  • Serve the tart warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an indulgent dessert.
